perpetual impermanence

An exhibition presented by the Gallery of the Common Experience featuring non-digital photography. Chronicling the history and future of photography, this exhibition dynamically captures the infinite iterations of the human form through alternative photography including numerous photographic techniques, from cyanotypes to analog format film. This was on view from February to May in 2021 and I was the head curator for the project along with being featured in the exhibition and designing the promotional material. The other displayed artists were Fernanda Hernandez, Jacob Hernandez, Chantal Lesley, and Rachel Tucker.

Curatorial Background

The Gallery of the Common Experience has the focus of featuring exhibitions that follow the annual Common Experience theme. For the 2020-2021 school year, the theme was Dynamics. This exhibition was created with this theme in mind and follows the dynamics of photographic history along with the dynamics of capturing the human form in these finite moments. The techniques featured in the show were 35 mm film, 4x5 photography, Medium Format photography, and cyanotypes. In addition to the work, there were didactic panels detailing the history and process of these different techniques.

Exhibition events

To go along with the exhibition, two events open to the public were held. The first event was an online Artist Panel held over Zoom which was attended by the displayed artists and moderated by myself and the Gallery Curator, Shannon Faseler. The panel was recorded and posted the Gallery of the Common Experience web page. The second event held was a Cyanotype Workshop that I led in-person. We supplied participants with cyanotype paper and some basic materials to make impressions with and led them through the process of creating cyanotype prints. They were sent home with directions on how to finish developing them along with a demonstration. This workshop received great reception and was a really successful event for the gallery.
